Why I Use AI-Generated Food Illustrations (and When You’ll See Real Photos)

When I first cooked up the idea for Kaliforno Kitchen, the last thing I pictured was a splashy range of stock photos or overly styled food shots that seem to grace every glossy magazine cover. No, I envisioned something quieter and more timeless—like a personal field journal, replete with handwritten notes, pressed herbs, and meals worth remembering. But let’s face it: I also needed my website up and running yesterday.

Over the years, I’ve collected a small library of recipes, drawn from dinners at private events, time in professional kitchens, sauces perfected in peaceful hours before dawn, and the occasional midnight snack. The problem? I often forgot to take a picture in the frenzy of feeding an army of hungry guests. Fast forward to the launch of Kaliforno Kitchen, and there I was with a treasure trove of delightful recipes and no photos to accompany them. Just great.

Not Just a Placeholder—Aesthetic by Design

Could I have tossed in some generic food stock photos? Of course! But that’s not the vibe I’m going for here. Kaliforno Kitchen is meant to feel personal, seasonal, and just a tad handmade—like that one friend who always brings a homemade pie to dinner instead of the usual store-bought disaster. I’ve always had a soft spot for naturalist illustrations—those charming, softly-hued renderings straight out of old cookbooks and field guides. They evoke a quiet celebration of ingredients and craftsmanship that perfectly aligns with my cooking philosophy.

So, I leaned into this vintage aesthetic. Each image you see on my site is generated to conjure that delightful 19th-century scientific art style: square compositions with a centered dish, cozy vintage lighting, and painterly lines that make you think someone might have really sketched it out by hand. As for the plate? A consistent white ceramic with a cobalt blue rim—it’s about both style and consistency, even in a digital world that feels increasingly like it’s run by bots (cue the eye rolls).

These illustrations aren’t meant to trick you into believing they’re photographs. They’re here to offer a mood—think of them as a visual placeholder that whispers, “Hey, this dish is going to be fabulous,” without pretending to be the Pinterest-perfect food shot. After all, we all know that perfection is just a high-resolution filter away.

Function Over Flash

Let’s get real for a second: this project is as much about sharing usable recipes as it is about creating a pretty website. I faced a tough choice at launch: should I wait until every dish was exquisitely styled, photographed, edited, and uploaded or just dive in and start sharing? I chose the second option—I chose to serve.

At the end of the day, what counts is that you have the recipe for that irresistible Green Goddess dressing or that dreamy Summer Tomato Tart when the craving strikes—not whether I had the good fortune of a golden hour for a photoshoot. That’s my feeling anyway.

Sure, there are plans to sprinkle in some real photographs over time—some taken in my home kitchen, others from dinner parties, and a few collaborations with fellow chefs and photographers. But the mission remains unchanged: make the food useful, let it shine quietly, and keep the potential for growth alive.

This Site Is Alive, and It Will Grow

Kaliforno Kitchen is just getting started. Like a garden in its first season, I’m planting what I can, tending to what grows, and crossing my fingers that it’ll blossom into something beautiful. If you’ve stumbled upon this little corner of the internet now, congratulations—you’re here at the ground floor, witnessing the first sprigs of what will ultimately flourish. Recipes first, photography second, and storytelling always at the forefront.

In the meantime, I hope these illustrations help create a special atmosphere. I hope they add a touch of intention. And most importantly, I hope they inspire you to cook—because that’s really what this whole endeavor is about.
